What the On-Call seat includes
The On-Call seat covers unlimited schedules, escalation policies and routing rules, pages by SMS, voice call, mobile push and email, API and webhooks, Slack, Microsoft Teams and Google Chat integrations and on-call analytics. Telephony is in the seat price, so there is no per-message charge. Datadog lists no cap on schedules, escalation policies, incidents or postmortems. For a team that already runs Datadog, 20 USD with phone and SMS included is one of the lowest paging seats from a large vendor.
Who needs a seat in Datadog On-Call
This is the line most buyers misread. Datadog charges an On-Call seat for anyone who:
- is on an on-call schedule,
- is included in an escalation policy, or
- has set up notification preferences to receive pages.
The third rule catches people. An engineer who sets up paging preferences "just in case" holds a seat even if no schedule names them, and clearing the preferences does not release it; an admin has to unassign the seat in Seat Management.
An Incident Management seat is needed for anyone who edits or deletes an incident, adds a comment, graph or link to the timeline, assigns tasks or takes an incident role. Creating, viewing and joining incidents, viewing schedules and commenting in Slack without the Datadog buttons are free.
How Datadog bills Datadog On-Call seats
- Your contract has a committed seat count. Usage above it bills at the on-demand rate (29 USD for On-Call, 58 USD for the bundle).
- Datadog bills the peak number of seats assigned at one time in the month.
- An unassigned seat stays billable for the period you unassigned it in and drops off the next cycle. Swapping a seat between two people in the same month counts as two seats that month.
- Lowering the committed count is a contract change that takes effect at renewal.
- Seats are deduplicated by email across Datadog organizations, so one person in two orgs is one seat.
What does Datadog On-Call cost for 5, 15 and 40 responders?
Monthly cost at annual billing. Every responder carries the pager; in the middle row a smaller group of incident leads (2, 4 and 8 people) also holds Incident Management seats so they can run the timeline and post to the status page.
| Setup | 5 responders | 15 responders | 40 responders |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-Call only | 100 USD | 300 USD | 800 USD |
| On-Call plus Incident Management for the leads | 160 USD | 420 USD | 1,040 USD |
| Incident Response bundle for every responder | 200 USD | 600 USD | 1,600 USD |
| Incident Response bundle, month-to-month (48 USD) | 240 USD | 720 USD | 1,920 USD |
Two things move these numbers in real life. Rotation churn: a team of 15 that swaps three contractors in a month pays for 18 On-Call seats that month, and if the commitment was 15, the extra three bill at 29 USD each. Growth: hiring above the committed count bills every new responder at the on-demand rate until the next renewal, so commit to the head count you expect at month 12, not today.
Is Datadog On-Call cheaper than PagerDuty?
Yes, on list price. List prices per user per month at annual billing, checked on each vendor's site in September and October 2026:
| Tool | Entry on-call seat | Full incident seat | Status page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Datadog | 20 USD On-Call, SMS and voice included | 40 USD Incident Response bundle | Unlimited, with custom domains, in Incident Management or the bundle |
| PagerDuty | 21 USD Professional | 41 USD Business | External page with 250 subscribers on Professional, 500 on Business |
| incident.io | 25 USD (Team 15 + on-call 10) | 45 USD (Pro 25 + on-call 20) | 1 public on every plan, internal page on Pro |
| Rootly | 20 USD On-Call Essentials | 40 USD with Incident Response Essentials | 1 external and 1 internal page with Incident Response |
| Better Stack | 29 USD responder license | 29 USD (one license) | 1 included, extras and access control per page |
| IncidentBot | 24 USD Starter | 49 USD Team | 1 public on Starter, 3 public or private on Team |
Datadog On-Call and Rootly On-Call Essentials share the lowest paging seat on this list, and Datadog includes telephony. PagerDuty Professional is a dollar more, but PagerDuty is the pick when alerts come from many monitoring tools and the pager has to outlive a change of observability vendor. Full plan detail for the others is in our PagerDuty pricing, incident.io pricing, Rootly pricing and Better Stack pricing breakdowns.
Datadog On-Call vs IncidentBot for 5, 15 and 40 responders
Same scenario with a public status page and an incident process in Slack, monthly at annual billing.
| Setup | 5 responders | 15 responders | 40 responders |
|---|---|---|---|
| Datadog On-Call plus Incident Management for the leads | 160 USD | 420 USD | 1,040 USD |
| Datadog Incident Response bundle for every responder | 200 USD | 600 USD | 1,600 USD |
| IncidentBot Starter (1 public page, 100 SMS and voice per user) | 120 USD | 360 USD | 960 USD |
| IncidentBot Team (3 public or private pages, unlimited SMS and voice) | 245 USD | 735 USD | 1,960 USD |
Read it honestly. If you only need paging, Datadog On-Call at 20 USD is cheaper than any IncidentBot plan. Once you add a status page and incident roles, IncidentBot Starter costs less than the Datadog combination at every size, because one seat covers paging and the incident process. IncidentBot Team costs more than the Datadog bundle; you pay for unlimited paging, private status pages, free read-only stakeholders and a contract that is not tied to your monitoring spend, with monthly plans and no committed seat count. The side-by-side feature table and a migration plan are on our Datadog On-Call alternative page.
How to price Datadog On-Call before you sign
- Count everyone who will hold a seat during the year, including contractors and people who rotate in for holidays, not the number on call at one time.
- Audit notification preferences. Anyone who set them up holds a seat; unassign the ones who are not on a schedule.
- Decide who needs Incident Management. If incident leads and responders are the same people, the 40 USD bundle beats 20 plus 30. If a big rotation is led by a handful of commanders, buy the products separately.
- Put the on-demand rate in the spreadsheet. Every seat above the commitment costs 29 USD for On-Call and 58 USD for the bundle.
- Ask whether On-Call and Incident Management can renew on a different date from your monitoring contract, so a change in observability spend does not force a pager decision at the same time.
- If the Datadog bill as a whole is what you are trying to control, a cloud cost management tool will show which line grows fastest before the renewal call.
If you are committed to Datadog and only need a pager, Datadog On-Call is a strong buy. If you want paging, incidents in Slack and status pages on one seat from a vendor that does not also sell your monitoring, compare the total in our on call management software pricing calculator first.
